WOW, now that was some impressive wind. A cold front stalled to our north and the high pressure axis to our south created some strong gusty west winds on Friday in the 15-40 knot range. The wind took a little break on Saturday as the next front approached, in the 15-25 knot range from the west. Then yesterday morning it started out SW and clocked out of the W as it increased into the 30 knot range by late morning. I was teaching a lesson on the new 6 meter Best Guroo over at Vilano's Porpoise Point, and by the time I left at 3 p.m. it was starting to gust over 35 knots. There were reports of 45 mph gusts at the airport yesterday afternoon! The surprising thing was that there was noone else out there. The wind was plenty consistent for riding, and the tide was incoming from 9-3. Where were ya? For today the forecast is calling for NW winds, decreasing slightly in the afternoon. There is a slight possibility that it will clock out of the NNW and be rideable at Matanzas in the afternoon. Tomorrow looks like a better chance of some fun 15-20 knot NE winds, with the outgoing tide in late afternoon until dark at Matanzas. Then Wednesday and Thursday have a good chance of another sea breeze pattern setting up ahead of the next front. The other good thing is a solid NE swell that will start late Wednesday into the rest of the week, bringing some overhead waves to our area, and possibly up to double overhead in central and south Florida. Sometimes the NE swell can create a southerly current that opposes the sea breeze, setting up some epic wave riding and helping to stay upwind in the surf!
