Kiteboarding is the fastest growing water sport in the world today. It is also probably the most fun watersport you will ever experience. It combines some of the best aspects of surfing, windsurfing, wakeboarding, snowboarding and skateboarding all in one sport. As with any other extreme sport it can be dangerous and life threatening if not done properly. As a kiteboarder you are responsible for not only your own safety but the safety of others when participating in the sport. If you don’t learn how to kite properly you will most likely hurt yourself, maybe others, as well as destroy your newly purchased gear. When someone gets hurt in our sport it draws a lot of negative attention. This can lead to a ban or restrictions from using our area beaches and will surely not make you friends with the local kiteboarding community. By taking a lesson from a professional certified instructor you can lower the risks of accidents and injury as well as improve your learning curve. Additionally, you’ll gain product knowledge so that when you purchase gear at the end of your introductory lessons you will have some foundation to make an informed decision. Finally, the professional instructor will ensure your lessons are comprehensive in both safety and technique which will build your confidence level and substantially increase your learning curve.
Our instructors will supply all of your kite specific gear for the introductory lessons with the exception of wetsuits. We have found that this is the best approach to teaching the sport because our instructors have a variety of kites and boards appropriate for the varying conditions that you may experience on the day of your lesson. We recommend that you not purchase kiteboarding gear, particularly used gear, other than a harness and trainer kite until you have taken both land and water lessons. If you do so you may be wasting your money by acquiring old, worn and/or outdated equipment that may significantly slow your learning curve.
Our 2007 Lesson Program
We highly recommend that you purchase a trainer kite and instructional video from us to help you learn the basics of kite flying prior to your first lesson. Doing so will provide a foundation of kite control skills which will reduce the number of hours required during the initial Land Lesson and save you time and money. It is also helpful but not mandatory that you have some board skills prior to the lesson. These skills can be acquired through previous experience surfing, wakeboarding or other board sports. We can also arrange for a tow lesson on a kiteboard behind a boat or jet ski if desired, or you can check out the cable park at the Orlando Watersports Complex.
On the day of your instruction you will also be required to sign a Release of Liability and Declaration of Fitness prior to the start of your lesson.
For 2007 we have structured our lesson program into 3 segments which are designed to provide you with comprehensive and progressive learning skills to get you from novice to up and riding safely in an efficient and effective manner. All lessons are a minimum of 2 hours long with all kite gear provided. Use of your individual gear must be coordinated with your instructor prior to the day of your lesson. Our instructor to student ratio is typically 1 instructor to 1 or 2 students. Higher ratios of students to instructors will be accommodated on a case by case basis and must be individually coordinated with the instructor. We also recommend that you partner with a friend for your lesson as it should lower your cost and provide you with a partner to work with subsequent to your training.
Scheduling a Lesson
To schedule a 1 person lesson we require a $50 deposit and a $75 deposit for double lessons. Your Deposit covers both the Land and Water lessons. Your deposit is refundable up to 24 hours before your lesson. Your deposit is non-refundable should you not show up to your appointment the day of your lesson. Your instructor will take your deposit when scheduling your lesson as well as cover payment requirements. Lessons are in high demand in the spring, summer and fall and with a limited number of windy days and instructors it is best to get scheduled as soon as possible. Please call the shop at (904) 461-9415 and we can direct you to one of our recommended instructors.
